DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS

The department offers one degree for undergraduates.

The Physical Education program leads to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree and concurrent teacher certificate. The program of study in physical education includes general, professional, and specialized education. The flexibility of the curriculum provides the student an opportunity to select from the following areas: Adapted Physical Education, Health Education, and Coaching (*). The primary goal of the undergraduate teacher education program is to insure success within the teaching profession by:

  • Providing a comprehensive knowledge base that insures competence in physical education subject matter areas.
  • Affording the opportunity to develop sophisticated skills.

Students enrolled in the undergraduate physical education teacher education programs are supplied a carefully planned course of study that emphasizes excellence in both theoretical and applied learning. The program strives to prepare teachers who will be able to address and cope with the unique educational challenges of the twenty-first century.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and Salisbury State University (SSU) work collaboratively in the Physical Education major programs. Students may fulfill their required courses at either university by following the appropriate schedule of courses and securing the consent of their advisor before enrolling in the course(s). Shuttle bus transportation is provided. The intercampus enrollment form must be completed with the appropriate signatures and submitted to the registrar on the home campus before enrollment is officially completed.

* The Department of Physical Education is no longer accepting new enrollees due to curriculum changes.
