PHYSICAL EDUCATION

EDHE 101 Personal and Community Hygiene — 2 cr.
Provision of knowledge and development of a healthy mental attitude and habits needed to improve and maintain good health. Emphasis on health fads, frauds, nutrition, disease prevention, safety, drug use and abuse, and preparation for family living.

EDHE 104 Women's Health — 2 cr.
This course is designed to help students understand the changes that have occurred historically in society's attitudes toward women and to gain a deeper understanding of their anatomy and physiology. The course helps the student to develop an awareness and become more knowledgeable regarding diseases and health problems that affect women specifically, and learning how to prevent these diseases.

EDHE 107 Human Sexuality — 2 cr.
The aim of human sexuality is to provide students with an overview of the many biological, psychological, sociological, and historical dimensions of sexuality in a nonjudgmental tone. The main emphasis will be helping students make responsible decisions that promote healthy sexual behaviors and well-being.

EDHE 111 Personalized Health Fitness — 3 cr.

Study and practice of principles that affect human health. Emphasis on physical fitness, stress management, nutrition, and weight control with specific personalized techniques for optimizing health

EDHE 311 Intro to School Health — 3 cr.
This course is designed to inform students of the relationship of the school health program and the general education program. The roles of teachers, administrators, health specialists and others in related fields are discussed.

EDHE 320 Consumer Health — 3 cr.
A comprehensive study of contemporary issues examining consumer health problems from a perspective of what they know and how to select products and service.

EDHE 331 Health Education Methods — 3 cr.
Designed primarily to acquaint the students with the health teacher's individual role in the school health program. To understand and identify a health program and ways to meet the special needs of students.

EDHE 341 Drug Use and Abuse — 3 cr.
This course will examine psychological, sociological, physiological, philosophical, historical, legal and health aspects of drug use and abuse. Special attention will be focused on general motivations for drug use among high school and college student

EDHE 342 Emergency Life-Saving Tech — 3 cr.
Students will learn the proper techniques for performing CPR and for administering aid to choking victims.

EDHE 431 Health Prob. of Children/Adolescents — 3 cr.
The course involves a study of the health needs and problems of students from primary grades through secondary school. Physical, mental, and social aspects of health are considered in relation to these students.

EDHE 440 Methods & Materials in Health Educ — 3 cr.
This course provides students with an understanding of the relationship between curriculum planning and the selection and use of teaching aids and materials. Prerequisites D 311 and HEED 431 or permission of instructor.

EDHE 472 Seminar in Cont Issues in Health — 3 cr.
This experience provides students with opportunities to investigate current issues which impact directly on healthy concerns in contemporary society. An interdisciplinary approach will be utilized whenever possible. The ecological, environmental, personal, and community health concerns are some areas which will be covered.

EDHE 490 Teaching Internship and Seminar — 9 cr.
Students are assigned to approved secondary schools for 10 weeks to assume teaching responsibilities under the guidance of an experienced teacher and a member of the faculty of the University. Although no student teaching situation is the same for any two student teachers, the goal for this course is to develop competent, effective teachers. Included within the framework for the course is a seminar involving analysis and follow-up of the actual teaching internship. Strengths and weaknesses are identified through large and small group discussions, professional readings and related activities. Prerequisites: Satisfy all criteria for admission to student teaching.

EDPE 101 Cardio-Vascular Fit./Slimnastics — 1 cr.
Students are introduced to the basic activities which will engender significant physical and cardiovascular fitness through the participation in aerobic activities. This participation will enable them to develop levels of strength, stamina, flexibility, balance, agility, eye-hand coordination and kinesthesia perception.

EDPE 102 Lifetime Activities — 1 cr.
A comprehensive exposure to lifetime activities, such as archery, golf, bowling. The purpose is to apprise individuals of ways whereby one may participate effectively throughout life in physical activities.

EDPE 103 Techniques of Self-Defense/Karate. — 1 cr.
Students will have a comprehensive exposure to the fundamental techniques and procedures necessary to competently perform martial arts skills; this exposure includes students demonstrating physical, mental and psychological skills which are inherently components of martial arts.

EDPE 105 Slimnastics — 1 cr.
The purpose of this course is to help students develop their bodies physically with special emphasis on posture, figure alignment, body mechanics, diet and weight control through exercise.

EDPE 112 Stunts and Tumbling — 1 cr.
This course covers basic knowledge, techniques and practices of fundamental skills of simple stunts, tumbling, static balance stunts, pyramid building and floor exercise.

EDPE 121 Elementary Swimming — 1 cr.

This course gives the basic skills of swimming, including adjustment to the water, buoyancy, floating, propulsion through the water involving coordination of arms and legs in stroking combined with breathing and safety.

EDPE 122 Racquet Sports — 1 cr.
This course is designed to provide students with excellent opportunities to learn about and to develop physical, mental, social, and psychological proficiency associated with racquet sports skills for life-long participation and enjoyment.

EDPE 123 Tennis I — 1 cr.
Progressive techniques, practice of skills and the opportunity to experience tournament competition.

EDPE 132 Track and Field — 1 cr.
An analysis of the various techniques and skills involved in the development of proficiency in track and field.

EDPE 133 Racquetball — 1 cr.
An introduction to the game of racquetball, strategy, individual and tournament competition, and the rules governing each activity.

EDPE 150 Archery — 1 cr.
Skills, rules, techniques and terminology of archery.

EDPE 151 Golf — 1 cr.
Skills, rules, techniques and terminology of golf.

EDPE 152 Weight Training — 1 cr.
Application of kinesiology principles to muscular development.

EDPE 153 Wrestling — 1 cr.
Rules, skills, techniques, terminology and practice in wrestling.

Basic instructions in boxing techniques.

EDPE 162 Volleyball — 1 cr.
Skills, rules, strategies and terminology in volleyball.

EDPE 163 Tech. & Prin. of Weight Training — 1 cr.
Advanced application of kinesiological principles to muscular development with emphasis on anatomy nutrition and advanced techniques. Prerequisite: EDPE 152.

EDPE 171 Fencing — 1 cr.
Instructions in the elementary skills of fencing.

Fundamentals, skills, techniques and terminology in bowling.

EDPE 200 Intro to Hist./Prin. of Phys. Ed — 3 cr.
This course provide students with a comprehensive review of the professional history of physical education, sport and athletics and the determining psychological, sociological, intellectual and philosophical principles which fostered and led to the perennial development of contemporary study of physical education

EDPE 211 Dance — 1 cr.
Movement skills and basic Modern Dance techniques for the development of strength, flexibility, poise, rhythm, communication of ideas and feelings through dance.

EDPE 212 Dance II — 1 cr.
A study of patterns, structures and history of current social and folk dances.

EDPE 222 Intermediate Swimming — 1 cr.
Continuation of techniques of elementary swimming with emphasis on the development of skills in the basic or standard swimming strokes.

EDPE 253 Principles/Techniques of Wt. Trng. — 1 cr.
Students are taught the significance of weight training as a preventative tool to combat debilitating problems associated with poor health, This course will provide students the opportunity to design and participate in an individualistic and effective weight training program.

EDPE 301 Test and Measurements in P.E. — 3 cr.
Use and interpretation of basic statistical techniques in the application of Health, Physical Education and Educational Research. Included measures of central tendency, variability, graphic representation, large sample, error theory and simple correlation analysis as applied particularly in evaluation of test material.

EDPE 302 Prevention & Care of Athletic Injuries — 3 cr.
An integrated interpretation of the principles of Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology as related to the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Students will receive laboratory experiences in emergency treatment of athletic injuries, taping, strapping, and other supportive equipment designed to prevent or minimize injuries peculiar to athletes. Prerequisites: BIOL232 and EDPE 311.

EDPE 310 Physical Education For the Disabled I — 3 cr.
This course provides students with opportunities to examine perennial professional efforts to increase to the effectiveness in providing physical education for the disabled. Specifically, emphases will be placed in the area of individualized sports and adjustments needed for optimum participation by the disabled.

EDPE 311 Kinesiology — 3 cr.
Gross Anatomy of skeletal and muscular systems, mechanics of body movements, analysis of skills used in physical education and occupational therapy.

EDPE 320 Physical Education For the Disabled II — 3 cr.
This course provides students with opportunities to examine perennial professional efforts to increase to the effectiveness in providing physical education for the disabled. Specifically, emphases will be placed in the area of team sports and adjustments needed for optimum participation by the disabled.

EDPE 322 Tech. Of Gym./Stunts/Elem. App. — 1 cr.
This course provides students with basic knowledge, techniques, and practices of fundamental skills of gymnastics, simple stunts, tumbling, static balance stunts, spatial relationships and perception or awareness. Students will be provided opportunities to develop skills associated with the opportunities develop skills associated with the parallel bar, vaulting box, high bar, horse, floor exercise, uneven bars, and trampoline,

EDPE 332 Physiology of Muscular Activity — 3 cr.
A comprehensive study of the extent and nature of body variations as a result of physical exertion. The student will receive laboratory experience dealing with the oxidation processes of the body in terms of the utilization of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Prerequisites: BIOL 232.

EDPE 341 First Aid, Safety, and CPR — 1 cr.
Basic principles of spontaneous and temporary care given to victims of accidents or sudden illness as prescribed by the Am. Red Cross.

EDPE 352 Psychology of Sports — 3 cr.
An in-depth study, comparison and analysis of humans behavior while participating in physical activities.

EDPE 362 Advanced Swimming — 2 cr.
Instructions in swimming and lifesaving skills and procedures. Prerequisite: EDPE 222 or a current intermediate swimming certificate.

EDPE 363 Motor Learning — 3 cr.
This course deals with motor learning and motor performance. Methodology, individual differences, control of movement, motivation, and timing are major topics to be discussed.

EDPE 382 Sociology of Sports — 3 cr.
A critical analysis of the role and relationship of sports in the American society in reference to social change, education, the economy, political system, race sexism heritage of sports in America and sports as a microcosm of the general American society from an historical and contemporary perspective.

EDPE 401 Practicum/Observation in Coaching — 3 cr.
This course provides students with first hand experiences relative to the coaching profession; students will have opportunities to work with recognized competent coaches in order to gain direct incite into the complexities, and joy of effective and professional coaching of individual sports. Students will have the responsibility of completing specific professional coaching obligations or duties as the coach of an individual sport.

EDPE 402 Practicum/Observ. in Adapted Phy.Ed. — 3 cr.
Students will have opportunities to directly work with disabled individuals in providing substantive physical education activities for the disabled in a community facility.

EDPE 411 Adapted Physical Education — 3 cr.
Application of bio-medical and physiological principles in the teaching of exceptional students. To assist prospective teachers to deal effectively with a typical student. Prerequisite: EDPE 311.

EDPE 421 Adv./Coach. Tech. I Team Sports Skills — 2 cr.
Students will have opportunities to learn contemporary skills and techniques associated with individual sports; In addition, students will examine the psychological, sociological, philosophical, and intellectual components of coaching individual sports. Students will be required to coach an individual sport in the university's intramural sports program and to submit a participation journal at the conclusion of the season.

EDPE 422 Adv./Coach. Tech. II Indiv. Sp. Skills — 2 cr.
Student will have opportunities to learn contemporary skills and coaching techniques associated with coaching team sports; in addition, students will examine the psychological, sociological, philosophical, and intellectual components of coaching team sports. Students will be required to coach a team sport in the university's intramural sports program and to submit a participation journal at the conclusion of the season.

EDPE 431 Organ and Administration of Phys Edu — 2 cr.
A thorough investigation of administrative theories and procedures in terms of establishing and maintaining physical educational programs; curriculum construction, community relations, physical plant, staff and other professional personnel, student relations, budget planning and policy.

EDPE 499 Independent Study in P. E. — 1-3 cr.
Provides a student with an opportunity to freely elect specialized areas of study within physical education, determined by either deficiencies or projected areas of growth or further studies. The particular student will obtain the written permission of the instructor. This course is similar to tutorials in structure. The student will have the responsibility of completing all work contracted by him and the instructor. Credit hours may vary in accordance with the need and amount of work assigned. Prerequisite: Jr./Sr. standing and consent of the Department Head.

RECREATION EDUCATION

RECR 211 Introduction to Recreation Ed. — 3 cr.
Historical and philosophical study of recreation relative to organization and administration of recreational programs and facilities. This educational experience is designed to investigate recreational needs of the contemporary increase in leisure time, special interests and needs of all individuals.

RECR 212 Basic Methods in Camping and Outdoor Recreation — 3 cr.
This course is designed to provide theoretical and practical experiences in basic methods and philosophical thoughts in contemporary camping and outdoor recreation. Students must participate in at least two overnight camping experiences.

RECR 412 Leadership in Community Rec. — 3 cr.
An analysis of the historical, philosophical concepts and professional principles involved in the organization and administration of community based recreational activities.
Prerequisites: RECR 211.

RECR 413 Therapeutic Recreation — 3 cr.
An investigation of the physical psychological and sociological deficiencies and illnesses as they impact upon various recreational skills activities and programs. Methods currently recommended for the implementation of these programs will be studied.
